Time to Replace the Guttering?

Warning Signs that Gutters, Soffits or Fascias need Replacing

Much as we don't wish to be the harbingers of doom, we thought we would give a few timely reminders about why your gutters, soffits and fascias are important, and why warning signs should not be ignored. As water is a major cause of problems to any property, it pays to stay aware of the health of your own gutters. This isn't always easy as not many people fancy teetering around at the top of a ladder!

The fact is that these fittings are the first line of defence against the elements, and if they aren't repaired or replaced when they need to be, your home could be compromised. A blocked gutter is one of the simpler issues and fairly straightforward to put right. Gutters can last upwards of 30 years, and clearing them of leaves and debris once or twice a year will usually suffice and keep problems at bay

Gutters are an important part of your home as they direct rainwater away from windows, exterior walls, doors and foundations. They prevent water from making its way inside the home, and if defective you may experience poor drainage, interior flooding, rotting fascias and bowing driveways.

Here are five signs to look out for, that indicate your gutters may need replacing:-

1. Cracking or splitting

Small cracks or splits should not be overlooked, as they can quickly grow and become a problem, allowing water to seep behind gutters damaging fascias, shingles and possibly the foundation.

2. Peeling paint around gutters or orange flecks

Paint used on gutters is designed to be tough and long lasting throughout the seasons, so paint that is peeling or visible flecks of orange indicate the start of rusting. Water may be causing problems by sitting within the gutter or cracks and damage may be present.

3. Mildew or pools of water around your home’s foundation

As gutters are designed to guide water away from your home’s foundation, pools of water or mildew in the area may be due to gutters not functioning properly. While this could be caused by clogged gutters, there could also be a defect of some sort which should be investigated.

4. Signs of water damage or water marks beneath the gutter

Check your gutters about once per year on a dry day, and if you see evidence of water marks or damage underneath the gutters water could be leaking or overflowing. This kind of problem can damage your soffits or fascia board.

5. Gutters are sagging or pulling away from the house

This issue can be seen from the ground, and indicates that repairs or a replacement is needed. It can arise through gutters full of leaves or soil that are not draining properly.

imagen Hot Dry Weather in Braintree, Sudbury & Colchester

An article in the Braintree and Witham Times reported that June 2018 has been the warmest on record since 1910, and Jules Pretty, professor of Environment and Society at the University of Essex, stated that hot and cold spells will last longer in the future. June was also an extremely dry month, and all areas of Essex had just 1.7mm of rainfall, only four per cent of the average.

While, if this trend continues, it means nice summers, there is bound to be in turn additional periods of heavy rain, as well as lots of sleet, snow and ice during the winter.
